Die kreisfreie Stadt Darmstadt ist das südliche Oberzentrum der Metropolregion Rhein-Main. Darmstadt ist bekannt für seine wissenschaftliche Produktion in Deutschland. Im Jahr 1997 wurde ihr als erster deutscher Stadt der Titel Wissenschaftsstadt verliehen. Zu Ehren der Stadt wurde zum Beispiel das 1994 synthetisierte chemische Element mit der Ordnungszahl 110 (110Ds im Periodensystem) “darmstadium” genannt. Zu Ehren der Stadt gibt es sogar einen 2008 entdeckten Planetoiden des Sonnensystems, der sich zwischen Jupiter und Mars befindet.

Die Stadt ist Standort einer Technischen Universität und zweier Hochschulen, wie der Hochschule Darmstadt (hda). An diesen Hochschulen sind mehr als 50.000 Studenten immatrikuliert, was einem Verhältnis von einem Studenten*innen auf drei Einwohner*innen entspricht. Außerdem gibt es mehr als 30 wissenschaftliche Einrichtungen, die Darmstadt zu einem der führenden Forschungs- und Bildungszentren in Deutschland machen. In der Stadt befindet sich zum Beispiel das European Space Operations Centre, das für die Steuerung der Satelliten der European Space Agency zuständig ist.

Die Stadt hat auch eine internationale Atmosphäre. Nach Angaben der Darmstadt Stadtverwaltung vom Juni 2022 gibt es 164.369 Einwohner*innen, davon 37.999 Ausländer*innen. Das bedeutet, dass auf 4 Einwohner*innen 1 Ausländer*innen kommt.

Darmstadt hat auch viele Parks, Museen, Freizeitgebiete und Wald. Auch Kunst und Kultur sind sehr präsent. Das wichtigste Wahrzeichen der Stadt ist die Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt, die 2021 zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe erklärt wurde.

Die Touristenattraktion ist ein Ensemble aus Hochzeitsturm, Ausstellungsgebäude, Museum Künstlerkolonie, Platanenhain und Künstlerhäusern. Großherzog Ernst Ludwig gründete 1899 die Künstlerkolonie auf der Mathildenhöhe, die Darmstadt zu einem Mittelpunkt der europäischen Kunstentwicklung machte.

In der Nähe befindet sich auch die Russische Kapelle, die von Zar Nikolaus II. in Auftrag gegeben wurde, der Prinzessin Alix, die jüngere Schwester von Großherzog Ernst Ludwig, heiratete.

Weitere wichtige Sehenswürdigkeiten der Stadt sind das Darmstadts Residenzschloss, Marktplatz und Altes Rathaus. Der Luisenplatz ist der wichtigste Treffpunkt der Stadt, in dessen Turm sich das Ludwigsdenkmal befindet.

Die Hochschule Darmstadt

Die Hochschule Darmstadt (h_da), auch bekannt als Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, ist eine der größten praxisorientierten staatlichen Hochschulen in Hessen und eine der führenden Hochschulen für Technik in Deutschland.

An den Standorten Darmstadt und Dieburg studieren mehr als 16.500 Studierende. Die Studien- und Forschungsbereiche reichen von Ingenieurwissenschaften, Mathematik und Naturwissenschaften, Informatik und Informationswissenschaft über Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft bis hin zu Architektur, Medien und Design.

Die h_da ist auch Mitglied der European Universities Alliance (EUA) und der Global Partners European Alliance (GPEA).

The independent city of Darmstadt is the main southern centre of the Rhine-Main metropolitan area. Darmstadt is renowned for its scientific production in Germany. In 1997, it was the first German city to be awarded the title Wissenschaftsstadt (City of Science). In the city’s honour, for example, the chemical element with atomic number 110 (110Ds in the periodic table) synthesised in 1994 was named “darmstadium”. In honour of the city there is even a planetoid of the solar system, situated between Jupiter and Mars, discovered in 2008.

The city is home to a technical university and two universities of applied sciences, such as the Hochschule Darmstadt (hda). More than 50,000 students are enrolled in these campuses, a ratio of one student to every three inhabitants. There are also more than 30 scientific institutions, making Darmstadt one of the leading centres of research and education in Germany. The city, for example, is home to the European Space Operations Centre, which is responsible for controlling the satellites of the European Space Agency.

The city also has an international atmosphere. According to data from the Darmstadt City Administration from June 2022, there are 164,369 inhabitants, of which 37,999 are foreigners. That’s the equivalent of 1 foreigner for every 4 residents.

Darmstadt also has many parks, museums, leisure areas and forests. Art and culture are also very present. The city’s main landmark is Die Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021. The tourist attraction is an ensemble of the Wedding Tower, Exhibition Building, Artists’ Colony Museum, Plane Tree Grove and Artists’ Houses. Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig founded the artists’ colony on Mathildenhöhe in 1899, which made Darmstadt a centre of European art development. Nearby you can also find the Russische Kapelle, commissioned by Tsar Nikolaus II, who married Princess Alix, the younger sister of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig.

Other major attractions of the city are the Darmstadts Residenzschloss, Marktplatz und Altes Rathaus. Luisenplatz is the city’s main meeting point, with the tower housing the Ludwigsmonument.

Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences

Hochschule Darmstadt (h_da), also known as Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, is one of the largest practice-oriented state universities in Hessen and one of the leading Universities of Applied Sciences in Germany.

There are more than 16,500 students on the Darmstadt and Dieburg campuses. Course and research areas range from engineering sciences, mathematics and natural sciences, information science and computer science to business and society as well as architecture, media and design.
